Your eye care team
During your initial evaluation, you may meet with the following eye specialists:

  • Ophthalmic nurse or technician, who will do your tests and explain your different options.
  • An optometrist who examines your eyes before and after surgery.
  • An ophthalmologist who will examine your eyes and review with you the different surgical options as well as possible side effects.
  • An ophthalmic surgeon who will perform your surgery.

Your evaluation prior to surgery
In recent years, The Montreal Eye Clinic has acquired state-of-the-art equipment to offer you, in preparation for surgery, one of the most complete evaluations of your eye condition.

Your surgical options
In addition to laser vision correction, The Montreal Eye Clinic offers a wide range of refractive surgery procedures. This expertise enables the surgeon to review the surgical options with each patient in order to select the most appropriate one.

Your follow-up care kit
When you book for surgery, you will receive a follow-up care kit, which includes eye drops protective glasses as well as a booklet with detailed instructions on what to do before and after surgery.

Tests Before Surgery

Depending on your condition, some or all of the following tests may be required:

Refraction
This test measures your total eye power to determine the exact degree of your myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism.

ORB scan
Without making any contact with your eye, this multifunctional machine scans thousands of points on the surface of the cornea to reveal its shape (topography) and to measure its thickness (pachymetry).

Wavefront Analysis
This test gives a detailed mapping of the eye in order to analyze subtle optical imperfections called higher order aberrations. These aberrations are found within the entire refractive system (cornea, lens and retina) of the eye and differ from one patient to the other.

OPD scan
The Optical Path Difference scanner is the only system capable of simultaneously measuring the refraction, topography and wavefront aberrations. By comparing and analyzing the combined results of these tests, your doctor can more precisely fine tune the visual outcome after refractive surgery. The OPD scanner also measures pupil size to calculate the best treatment zone for each eye.

Laser Biometry
In surgical correction of presbyopia, the IOL Master is used to scan your eyeball to measure its exact diameter. It uses a cold laser beam to calculate, with unprecedented precision, the power of the lens (IOL) to be implanted in the eye.
