Called Prelex for Presbyopic lens exchange,
this new procedure is similar to the cataract surgery procedure.
A small incision is made in the cornea. The hardened lens is
then removed and replaced with a multifunctional intraocular
lens (IOL). Also called multifocal IOL, because it has small
magnification rings, this lens will allow you to have a full
range of vision at all distances, without glasses.
With the multifocal lens, night driving vision may be reduced
by halos and glare. These problems are related to the design
of the lens and cannot be completely eliminated. However, gradual
improvement is noted in most patients during the months following
surgery.
It is important to understand that the aim of using the multifunctional
lens is not to eliminate glasses, but rather to allow you to
do most of your daily activities without glasses.
** The goal of any refractive procedure is to reduce your
dependence on glasses. After surgery, you may still need to
wear glasses for some activities.
Although complications are rare, they can never be ruled out completely. Possible
complications include reduced vision, halos around lights, infection, inflammation
and dry eyes.
